Module summary

You’ve conquered the fear of the blank page. Now what? This module focuses on publishing and presentation to the public through the production and launch of our literary journal Tenter Hook. You will develop an understanding of the relationship between creative writing practices and the creative industries, exploring methods of reaching your audience. You also consider your own creative writing practice in the context of industry processes and professionalisation.

Objectives

We aim to identify contemporary challenges and opportunities in publishing and the broader the literary industry, including understanding marketing, copyright and authorship. Through a series of masterclasses, we will engage with professionals working in relevant areas from the creative industries such as publishing and event programming. In addition to overseeing the group’s production of Tenter Hook and its launch event, tutors will set writing exercises, and students will receive feedback on their creative writing from peers. Students will research specific case studies and then use their own creative writing in a mock submission to a publisher, agent or industry employer, drawing upon discussions from workshops and masterclasses.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of how literary texts are produced and disseminated.
2. Identify and engage with the editorial and organisational processes underlying literary production.
3. Evaluate the relationship between literary production and the practice of creative writing.

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
4. Implement technical skills appropriate to the publication of creative writing, which may include digital or manual skills (Technical skills).
5. Contribute as a team member within a collaborative publication project (Work Ready skills).
6. Execute group work and communicate with others on a literary showcase event (Enterprise skills).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

QAA Benchmarks confirm that the writing workshop plays a ‘central role’ in the teaching of Creative Writing. The writing workshop provides a space for students to “read and critically respond to each other's work, operating in a small group in which the role of the tutor is mainly to steer, inform and moderate discussion.” In addition to the regular oral feedback students will receive from their peers during workshop discussions, students will also have opportunities to receive individual formative feedback from the tutor verbally and/or in writing during and/or after the workshop sessions.
