Module summary
The module helps students to develop knowledge of key concepts relevant to literary and cultural studies, and to refine their skills and experience in communicating textual, critical and theoretical arguments and interpretations around the texts on the module. The focus is on reading and writing using academic modes and appropriate forms of analysis and discussion, concentrating on models of readers, writers and texts, and exploring literature from the Anglophone world. Objectives
The module aims to develop students’ knowledge of concepts in literary and cultural studies, and their understanding of communicating and reading in English at postgraduate level. The thematic focus is on concepts of reading, writing and textual composition, as theorised and identified in works of Anglophone literature. Through a curated selection of texts, students will develop their understanding of how texts create and reflect their readers and their writers, embedded in their literary and socio-historical contexts. In parallel, the students develop their understanding of voice and text in academic communication around literary and cultural matters, through the development of their own practice in speech and writing.
The learning outcomes are aligned with conceptual, critical and communicative knowledge and skills for the investigation and critique of Anglophone literary and cultural studies. These focus on elements that are vital for postgraduate study. The module’s objectives are achieved through a range of learning activities, including class discussion, groupwork, guided exercises in textual analysis, presentations, reflective and extended writing.
