Module summary

The module provides you with support, guidance and expertise as you complete an independent creative writing research project. Over the course of the module, you will select and develop your topic and form(s), undertake independent research and writing, and produce an extended piece of creative writing, or a portfolio of creative writing, accompanied by a critical reflection. We support you through a combination of a plenary lecture and workshops, and in your one-to-one supervision meetings with your supervisor.

Objectives

The module is designed as a capstone to the MA programme in Creative Writing, allowing students to develop their creative writing interests and advance their creative writing skills in a specialist area. The module also develops professional skills in time management, prioritisation, decision making and autonomous working. These aims are achieved through a combination of lecture and workshop sessions, covering topics such as proposal writing, drafting, and research skill; and individual supervision meetings for each student with an assigned supervisor.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

1. Identify an appropriate topic for creative writing practice research

2. Design and implement appropriate and effective research methods and writing forms for the chosen topic

3. Develop substantial knowledge about chosen topic area and writing form(s)

4. Identify previous creative writing and research relevant to the project

5. Produce an extended piece of creative writing, or portfolio of creative writing, which may be developed for publication

6. Produce a critical reflection to accompany the creative writing which articulates and examines the methodologies and processes undertaken to address the project's central research question

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Research proposal (200 words + 4 keywords) and writing sample of 1,000 words or poetry equivalent of 50 lines = 1,000 words or an agreed equivalent in pages or other methods of delivery if visual/sound/performance/intermedia poetry). Due start of semester 2. Monitored by convenor.

Writing samples: 2000 words; followed by 2000 words or poetry equivalent ( 50 lines = 1,000 words of poetry or an agreed equivalent in pages or other methods of delivery if visual/sound/performance/intermedia poetry). Due in semester 2. Monitored by supervisors.

Workshop feedback on developing research proposals and samples. In-class feedback. Students also have the option of giving a reading about their work-in-progress at the student-run MA Creative Writing reading event.
