Module summary

This module explores the representation of marginalised groups in Hollywood – variously accused by the Right of ‘going woke’ or by the Left of reinforcing hierarchies of gender, sexuality and race. The module offers critical insight into the representational processes that often cast individuals, groups, even entire cultures, in the role of ‘Other.’ It will encourage students to think about the ways in which questions of representation are explored by cultural theorists and film scholars.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to deepen students’ understanding of theoretical concepts surrounding the representation of difference or 'otherness' in Hollywood cinema. The module will introduce students to new research and scholarship in Film Studies related to the representation of marginalised groups in Hollywood. Via a series of case studies from a wide variety of genres, students will be encouraged to investigate how, and to which ideological ends, minority figures within Western society and other cultures are portrayed by the Hollywood system.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1: evaluate the core intellectual and theoretical issues related to minority representation in Hollywood cinema.
2: assess historical and contemporary developments in minority representation in Hollywood cinema.
3: show sensitive and critical understanding towards different forms and concepts of othering / otherness.
4: evaluate geopolitical and industrial developments that underpin contemporary changes to minority representation in Hollywood.

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

5: Identify gaps in knowledge and seek out the information or evidence needed in order to understand an issue, or to address a problem or task
6: Discriminate amongst information and evidence through identifying and evaluating factors such as the currency, reliability, relevance, authorship or completeness
7: Make connections across differing perspectives in order to explore ideas, identify problems and provide evidenced solutions
8: Define and frame a problem accurately through gathering relevant and reliable information
9 Interpret and analyse information from a number of sources, and differing views, to suggest a solution to a complex problem

Students will also be given formal feedback on their first assignment (1 x 1000-word literature review = 40%).
