Module summary

This module is for students who already have a basic knowledge of the language and wish to take their Japanese to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving a practical level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) while developing greater confidence and accuracy when using the language in a limited range of situations. The module also aims to stimulate students' interest in Japan and deepen their knowledge and understanding of Japanese society and some of the major cultural and linguistic differences.

Objectives

With their beginners' competence in Japanese, students taking this module should be able to build on their existing knowledge of the language and develop and extend their ability to communicate and function in Japanese.

They should also further develop their understanding of Japanese culture and know how to avoid major social, cultural and linguistic faux pas when speaking Japanese and/or when in Japan.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of commonly used instructions, commands and expressions in the topics covered;
- read short texts in Japanese;
- extract accurately the key information from audio and/or video material;
- handle short conversations in a familiar context;
- understand, and make themselves understood by, a sympathetic native speaker in specific contexts;
- demonstrate awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Japanese and English;
- understand the rules of writing kanji, write a limited number of words using the characters introduced in the module and produce short pieces of independent writing;
- demonstrate their knowledge of key areas of grammar.

5. Understanding and putting into practice the rules of writing up to 160 kanji characters

8. Making a detailed self-introduction
9. Feelings and emotions
10. Arranging to meet, accepting and declining invitations
11. Making phone calls
12. Talking about problems and explaining solutions.

Private study

Guided independent study each week including homework, review of the lesson as well as preparation, practice and consolidation for the weekly classes, the portfolio and the final exam.

The portfolio provides a framework for independent learning, enabling students to take more control over what they need to focus on, make their own choice of materials and employ their preferred style of learning.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Guided independent study, participation in class, feedback on core tasks, feedback on homework and preparation for the final speaking exam.
