Module summary
This module is for students who already have a good grade at AS/CEFR B1 or equivalent and wish to take their Spanish to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving a good level of communication and accuracy in speaking, listening, reading and writing in both formal and informal registers. Communication skills which will be developed include discussion, interview techniques, presentation skills, reporting skills and writing a report.Objectives
To consolidate knowledge of the Spanish language at upper intermediate/AS/CEFR B1 level and develop skills and competence up to A2/CEFR B1/B2. On completion of the module, students should be able to exchange on familiar and unfamiliar topics both orally and in writing, understand longer, more complex reading and listening material and demonstrate knowledge of key aspects of the culture of the countries where the language is spoken.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to:
- Communicate in the target language in a range of social and professional contexts
- Understand and use appropriately and accurately upper intermediate grammar including the use of all past tenses and the subjunctive
- Demonstrate proficiency in listening through accurately extracting key information from audio sources
- Demonstrate proficiency in reading through accurately extracting key information from written sources
- Produce longer pieces of writing in the target language with an appropriate degree of accuracy and fluency
- Demonstrate knowledge of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Spanish and English
Syllabus
- Review of language/grammar covered at lower intermediate level
- Giving and asking for opinions, analysis of different interpretations,
- Evaluating opinions and drawing conclusions; agreement or disagreement
- The Spanish-speaking world, identify hispanic countries and stereotypes, cultural issues and customs in Latin America
- Pre-Columbian civilizations – Understand the heritage and historic of the Hispanic people in Latin America. Azteca, Maya and Inca cultures
- Environment and Global Warning – causes, alternatives and the relationship between our lifestyle and the environment
- Technological advances – pros and cons of technology, medical research and ethnical problems
- Inmigration & racism – its origins, changing forms and consequences. Advantages and disadvantages integration of new citizen. Responsibility of receiving countries social exclusion. Understand and describe problems faced by immigrants.
- Anti-social behavior – New kind of crimes and new ways of combating it, effects and consequences of drug and alcohol. Punishment and its alternatives
- Wealth and poverty – the advantages of the public and private sector.
- Current affairs covering areas such as the environment, the arts, culture, entertainment and media
