Module summary

This module is for students who already have a good grade at A2/CEFR B1/B2 or equivalent and wish to take their Spanish to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving an advanced level of communication and accuracy in speaking, listening, reading and commentary / essay writing in both formal and informal registers. Communication skills which will be developed include debating and presentation skills, discussion, role play, interview techniques, and commentary / essay writing on a contemporary issue. The module includes a presentation based on private study, which provides the opportunity to research any area of personal interest through the medium of Spanish, whilst the commentary will be based on a module topic.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to consolidate knowledge of the Spanish language at advanced/A2/CEFR B1/B2 level and develop skills and competence up to A2 + 1/CEFR B2/C1. On completion of the module, students should be able to exchange on familiar and unfamiliar topics both orally and in writing, understand longer concrete and abstract reading and listening material. Students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of key aspects of the culture and current issues of the countries where the language is spoken.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to:
- Communicate in the target language in a range of social and professional contexts with a high degree of fluency and spontaneity
- Understand and use appropriately and accurately advanced grammar including the use of all past and future tenses, indirect discourse, the passive, organisational patterns such as relative clauses, prepositions and attributive adjective endings.
- Demonstrate proficiency in listening through accurately extracting key information from audio sources
- Demonstrate proficiency in reading through accurately extracting key information from written sources
- Produce well-structured detailed text on complex subjects in the target language with an appropriate degree of accuracy and cohesion
- Demonstrate knowledge of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Spanish and English

The module covers topics such as:
- Review of language/grammar covered at upper intermediate level
- Giving and asking for opinions, analysis of different interpretations
- Evaluate opinions and research outcomes and draw conclusions
- Comparing and contrasting, expressing agreement or (degrees of) disagreement
- Considering cause and effect, making a prognosis and hypothesising
- Current affairs covering topical issues of national and international relevance
- Spain and Spanish speaking countries place in the world, evaluating statistical data and trends
- Spanish speaking countries and the environment
- The media
- Higher education in Spain and Latin-America
- Intergenerational changes and attitudes; demographics and related concerns
- Technological developments: change and development, impacts of lifestyles, habits, work and education
