Module summary

This module is for students who have already studied Mandarin for about 2 years and have reached post-GCSE or A2 (CEF) or equivalent and wish to take their Mandarin to the next level.The emphasis is on achieving a good level of communication and accuracy in speaking, listening and reading. Mandarin character writing is secondary but students would be expected to be less reliant on pinyin.Communication skills which will be developed include discussion, interview techniques, presentation skills and reporting skills.

Objectives

To consolidate knowledge of Mandarin at elementary level and develop skills and competence up to GCSE level or A2 (CEF) or AS CEFR B1.

On completion of the module, students should be able to deal with information of a general nature in a familiar context and identify and note main points and opinions; sustain longer conversations in Mandarin and handle familiar and unfamiliar situations with some ease; exchange opinions and ideas on a range of topics. Students should be able to report facts and opinions with accuracy.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to:
- Make themselves understood by a sympathetic native speaker on the everyday topics covered
- Demonstrate awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Mandarin and English
- Demonstrate greater understanding and knowledge of key grammar points with appropriate usage
- Demonstrate proficiency in listening through accurately extracting key information from audio sources
- Read and understand short newspaper articles
- Write a short text of independent writing in Mandarin characters with less reliance on pinyin.

- Making recommendations; instructions; reporting
- Collating information showing pros and cons
- Talking about culture and customs
- Current affairs: environment (traffic; growth of industry; pollution; water and air quality, weather, etc)
- Completing transactions.
