Module summary

This module will develop student’s independent research capacity within the field of sustainable cities. The research Project (100%) will build on all previous learning to produce an original piece of research centred on a live urban problem identified by students and supported by an academic supervisor. In completion of the module students will have gained topic specific skills and general skills for their future career.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- identify and define a research problem.
- review relevant literature & develop justification (using critical thinking) for proposed project
- produce a research proposal including risk and ethics considerations.
- collect, analyse and synthesise research data.
- present information in a logical and cohesive way.
- understand the limitations of the research project.
- elicit appropriate conclusions.
- communicate through well-structured written documents.
Taught aspects and project supervision will support the independent learning and delivery of the module objectives

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Demonstrate a gap in body of knowledge in a chosen research area.
2. Develop & justify research design and method for data collection.
3. Collect and analyse data to elicit new knowledge.
4. Produce a written proposal and research report.

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Work ready skills: communication in supervision/assessment; time management & planning; IT skills; critical thinking; active learning.
2. Enterprise skills: Using insight and ability to identify and assess opportunities a project. Making sound judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data; developing project vision and purpose
3. Academic skills: time management, ethics, writing and critical thinking to deliver an independent research project
4. Sustainability skills: system thinking; future thinking; critical thinking; integrated problem solving; information searching

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
