Module summary
In this project module, students will undertake a real-life, independent research study, with the support of experienced academics. The choice of topics available may vary depending on interests and will include field-based, experimental, or computational research. During a discovery phase, students will be given the opportunity to investigate current research and will be given a choice of topics relevant to the research activity of the school and in some cases suggested by industrial companiesObjectives
- Ability to self-evaluate, reflect, and identify training needs through completion of research plans to ensure successful engagement and completion of research study.- Integrate, combine, and develop knowledge and relevant academic, research and professional skills to solve problems within a field of interest.
- Develop lines of questioning following the organisation, critique and analysis of scientific literature and data within the framework of their area of study
- Apply fundamental scientific principles to complete research in Food Science and Nutrition.
- Develop the ability to critically analyse, interpret and discuss relevant scientific literature and data to draw appropriate conclusions.
- Disseminate findings usings difference scientistic communication methods.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Retrieve and critically review relevant scientific literature and articulate a researchable question.
2. Plan and design an appropriate investigation
3. Competently conduct scientific research
4. Critically analyse and interpret findings in a concise manner using relevant statistical analysis to be able to draw appropriate conclusions
5. Scientifically communicate research findings using different communication methods.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Critical thinking: The ability to weigh up different arguments and perspectives, using supporting evidence to form opinions, arguments, theories and ideas
2. Problem solving and Analytical skills: The ability to take a logical approach to solving problems; resolving issues by tackling from different angles, using both analytical and creative skills. The ability to understand, interpret, analyse and manipulate numerical data.
3. Academic writing: The ability to write in a clear, concise, focused and structured manner that is supported by relevant evidence.
4. Information, data and media literacies: The ability to find, evaluate, organise and share information across a variety of formats and media, ensuring the reliability and integrity both of the sources that you use and of the ideas that they help you to generate
5. Ethics: The ability to understand the moral principles that govern a person's behaviour or the conducting of an activity in any given context
6. Time management, planning and organisation: The ability to prioritise, work efficiently and productively and to manage your time well in order to meet deadlines

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
