Module summary

This module will enable an absolute beginner student to develop their language skills up to A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). Language Learning in this module is student-centred and task-based. The classroom is conceived as a social space for communication. Listening, reading, writing, speaking, interaction and mediation tasks will be set.

Objectives

To develop ab initio French language skills and competence up to CEFRL A1 level/equivalent.

Teaching is divided into a series of units, developing various important skills, such as the ability to work in a team, to a deadline, and the ability to assimilate and organize language material and present it in a given register, style and context. Students should also develop an awareness of the cultures of the French-speaking world.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
LO1. understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
LO2. demonstrate a basic knowledge of grammar appropriate to A1 level to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
LO3. write short texts in response to a task or stimulus text on familiar topics, complete forms and other kinds of simple everyday correspondence.

Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
SO1. To enhance basic written and oral communication skills in French as well as learning skills.
SO2. To develop foundational work-ready skills (problem solving and analytic skills, independent/team working and time management)
SO3. To build intercultural awareness: knowledge and understanding of France and the Francophone world.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will complete several weekly homework tasks to consolidate learning and prepare for the next class. Feedback in class and on submitted homework will be provided. Draft facility for Portfolio tasks and mock exams. Draft portfolio monitored week 6 with feed forward to final submission in January exam period.
