Module summary

This module enables students who have completed an A1 CEFRL level to develop their language skills up to A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). Language Learning in this module is student-centred and task-based. The classroom is conceived as a social space for communication and the co-creation of communication-related tangible outputs. Listening, reading, writing, speaking, interaction and mediation tasks will be set to develop all these communication skills. This single-semester module is the second of two language modules taken by beginners in year 1. Both are studied alongside a year-long module offering an introduction to the histories and cultures of the French-speaking world.

Objectives

To develop the students’ language skills, cultural understanding, and intercultural competence up to CEFRL A2 level.

Teaching is divided into a series of units, developing various important skills, such as the ability to work in a team, to a deadline, and the ability to assimilate and organize language material and present it according to the register, style, and context of an A2 level.

Students should also develop an awareness of the cultural expressions and behaviours of the French-speaking world.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
LO1. Understand both through reading and listening sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance.
LO2. Communicate both through writing and speaking about simple and everyday tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and everyday matters (e.g., very basic personal and family information, describing people, shopping, talking about food and health, films and leisure activities, house descriptions and past experiences).
LO3. Develop an awareness of different cultural behaviours and the use different registers in social situations of most immediate relevance (e.g. greetings, farewells, introducing themselves, asking for favours, asking for objects, asking for and giving permission, apologies, and explanations).
LO4. Develop and communicate both through writing and speaking an understanding of different cultural and historical events and information of French-speaking countries (e.g. food and eating habits, authors, film directors and actors, types of houses and dwellings, places to visit and activities to do, past events of political and social relevance).
