Module summary
This module aims to give students without a background in the study of history at university level an introduction to French history in the period 1789-1914, during which France was transformed from an archaic society into a recognisably modern one.In the first semester students will acquire an overview of the social and political history of the period, before looking in more detail at selected aspects of the development of French society in the second semester.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the history of France between 1789 and 1914
- demonstrate an ability to analyse a range of social, cultural and political issues in relation to this historical context
- demonstrate an ability to assess critically both primary and secondary source materials and to engage in personal research.
Skills outcomes
Improved French written and oral communication.
Syllabus
The module will comprise 5 blocks of lectures and supporting seminars (4 lectures and 2 seminars for block 1; 3 lectures and 1 seminar for blocks 2-5).
The three blocks in the first semester will provide an overview of the events of the period and of the social and political developments which accompanied them.
The two in the second semester will look in more detail at themes drawn from the following list: the development of the mass press, the position of women in society, the relationship between church and state, colonialism, France's international relations, science and health care, institutions and constitutions.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Progress is monitored through regular structured contributions to seminars, upon which feedback will be given, and through an exam preparation workshop at the end of the semester 1 teaching period in which guidance will be provided on exam technique.In semester 2, oral and written feedback will be available on the essay plans prepared by students for presentation in seminars.
Students also have the opportunity to consult the academic tutors about the plans for their assessed essay in semester 2.
