Module summary

This course aims to further develop language skills, building upon the enhancement of the command of French achieved during the residence abroad. The aim is to approach the ability to speak and write and understand French possessed by an educated speaker whose first language is French. This involves achieving communicative competence, the ability to express oneself idiomatically, with a sensitivity to appropriate register, orally and in writing.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students will be expected to have achieved a high degree of competence in receptive, productive and inter-lingual skills in a range of registers.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should:
- have a thorough knowledge of French grammar and syntax;
and should be able to:
- understand authentic speech, audio recordings and written texts of a variety of subject and type;
- differentiate between a range of registers and styles in spoken and written French and use them appropriately;
- translate between French and English, using the vocabulary, syntax and phraseology appropriate to the target language;
- express themselves fluently and accurately in French and in English;
- identify and pursue their individual needs for independent study.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- express themselves fluently and accurately in French and in English;
- communicate orally in French effectively and at an advanced level demonstrating awareness and use of register and vocabulary appropriate to the context, and awareness of French society and culture;
- prepare, deliver and discuss a short oral exposé in French;
- identify, interpret and use complex grammatical and syntactical patterns in French;
- translate between French and English accurately and idiomatically;
- produce a summary in French of a French journalistic text.


Syllabus

Tuition will consist of three classes per week, two for written skills and one for oral. The written skills will involve regular translation to and from French, and summary in French of French texts (synthèse). Oral classes will include communication and comprehension across a range of registers, including the formal presentation of ideas (exposé). An important element of both will be the private study and revision which backs them up. Much other teaching of modules is carried out in French in Level 3 with the aim of consolidating these skills.

Private study

Weekly preparation of translation or summary exercises; preparation of material for oral classes; revision of grammar and vocabulary and preparation of exercises to discuss in grammar workshops.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Five marked written pieces per semester (translations, summary); feedback on work in grammar workshops: feedback on performance in Travaux Pratiques (oral) classes
