Module summary
This module responds to the changing landscape of industry by enabling students to make use of contemporary software packages currently used by leading organisations. It achieves this primarily through hands-on computer practical tasks with an ongoing emphasis on professional development. As such, this module will provide students with a critical understanding of these packages, such as their respective pros/cons and how they can be applied more widely in the workplace. To prompt early dissertation preparation, students will also be introduced to the research process with a view to developing their own research ideas and considering how these may be explored.Objectives
This module aims to:1. Enhance students’ technical skillsets by widening their experience of in-demand GIS and other software packages, beyond those taught elsewhere on the programme.
2. Provide an opportunity for students to learn a range of different spatial and statistical techniques and apply these in different contexts.
3. Develop awareness of the research process and how research is planned, organised and conducted.
4. Enable students to consider their own professional and personal development through an awareness of professional societies, bodies and groups.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Confidence in using several software packages and applying quantitative/spatial techniques to different datasets.
2. Knowledge of the process through which research projects are developed, planned and carried from inception through to completion/publication.
3. An understanding of the importance of professional and personal development in a GIScience context and some of the noteworthy societies, bodies and groups with which students can engage with throughout their careers.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
4. Work-ready Skills - Navigate and evidence competency when using software and sourcing data at the fore of contemporary industry/research.
5. Digital skills - Experience with using technical skills that stretch beyond traditional GIS and spatial analysis software.
6. Academic skills - Critically evaluate a range of both software packages and research ideas/projects.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Formative feedback will be provided during practical activities where students will be encouraged to post outputs to devoted unit-by-unit discussion boards. This will allow for peer critique in addition to staff comments. Note that the outputs requested here will differ from those required as part of the summative assessments.The module leader will also be on hand to provide support (email / Teams / discussion board / etc) during the teaching weeks, in advance of assessment. Whilst not directly formative assessment, this will ensure that the students receive feedback / support on matters of need.
