Objectives
- Students will be able to explain, understand and analyse the legal framework within which social work practice takes place.- To introduce students to legal perspectives, concepts and research that are crucial to social work.
- To understand the English and Welsh legal system and its relationship with social work practice.
- To encourage students to understand the impact of Human Rights Legislation upon social work practice and the rights of service users.
- To encourage students to understand issues of authority and accountability within the social work profession.
- To support students to have an understanding of the key legislation for Adult, Children and Mental Health and its application.
- To study theories about anti-discriminatory practice and diversity and how through policy and the law social workers can empower people to challenge discrimination and oppression.
Learning outcomes
- Students will analyse the role and functions of social work in contemporary society
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of the key areas of social work legislation for children, adults and mental health.
- Students will understand models of anti-discriminatory practice and which legislation challenges discrimination.
- Students will be able to explain the legal framework in England and Wales and how it applies to social work.
- Students will demonstrate an understanding of the significance of codes of practice, guidance, regulations and service delivery standards for social work practice.

Knowledge and Skills Statements:
This module covers the legislative framework for both adult and child and family social work. It supports student to develop the basic knowledge and understanding of the legal powers, functions and duties of social workers and to begin the process of understanding how to apply the law.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will get the opportunity to answer questions in class and to engage in group activities to develop an understanding of their progress. There will also be the opportunity to use tutorial support to check their understanding prior to the exam and to explore case studies in class to prepare for the exam case studies.
