Module summary
During this module students will continue to develop and build upon the knowledge and skills acquired in level 2 to be able to promote excellence in the delivery of care to women and babies with complications and additional care needs. The module will build upon the importance of communication, collaborative working and will apply this to practice- particularly situations where complications and emergencies occur. Professional accountability, professional misconduct, leadership and the importance of debrief in clinical practice will also be exploredand discussed in the context of the role of the midwife and the wider multi-disciplinary team. Clinical skills days focused on obstetric emergencies and recognition and management of the deteriorating woman will give students the opportunity to develop their knowledge, leadership and practical skills. This will be facilitated using different teaching methods and technologies such as the SIM-MOM and filming facilities within the clinical skills suite which will enable students to work in real-time simulation scenarios, apply underpinning knowledge of human factors and have the opportunity for detailed formative feedback from lecturers, clinical practitioners and their peers.Objectives
This module will focus on developing the skills, knowledge and attributes required to promote excellence in the delivery of care to women and newborn infants with a focus on complications and additional care needs. Students will continue to evaluate and critically appraise knowledge, research and policy to determine priorities for safe, effective care delivery and service improvement with a national and global insight.Learning outcomes
At the end of the module students will be able to:
1. Critically apply and demonstrate the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to promote excellence and deliver holistic care to women and newborn infants with complications and additional care needs.
2. Identify different methods / tools that can be used to assist with decision making in midwifery practice.
3. Critically explore quality and safety in maternity care, the importance of duty of candour and the role of midwives in enabling effective team working and promoting continuous improvement
4. Demonstrate underpinning knowledge and the ability to respond promptly to the signs of compromise and deterioration in the woman, fetus and newborn infant and to make clinical decisions based on needs, best practice evidence and act on those decisions.
5. Critically discuss the implications of poor practice through the regulatory framework and professional misconduct procedures.
6. Act appropriately in an obstetric emergency and understand the importance and implications of human factors.
7. Work inter-professionally in optimising normal physiological processes during childbearing and supporting safe physical, psychological, social and spiritual situations, working to promote positive outcomes and anticipate and prevent complications.

Students will develop skills for recognition and management of acute clinical situations and how to care for mothers and babies with complications.

Professional Practice:
Communication and interpersonal skills
Leadership skills in preparation for joining the professional register.
Ethics and accountability surrounding examination of the newborn.
Ethics and legislation surrounding acute deterioration.
Duty of candour, substandard care and the importance of human factors.
Case-studies from clinical practice.
Applied Practice:
Clinical skills and human factors.
Recognition and management of the deteriorating condition, obstetric emergencies (APH, PPH, Breech, PET, Sepsis, DIC, BLS, NLS, cord) and enhanced care.
Biopsychosocial-Spiritual:
Identification, management and care of women and newborns with additional and complex needs. Care of the critically ill woman, recognising and responding to the deteriorating fetus, debrief and maternal cardiac conditions.
Pathophysiology relating to obstetric emergencies and acute scenarios (such as VTE and anaphylaxis)
Medicines management.

Midwifery and childbearing from a national and global perspective
Evidence driving practice development.

Students will be offered formative feedback in a variety of formats throughout the module to give the opportunity to enhance their learning and development, this will be via:- Formative feedback from academic supervision for the essay in line with school guidance
- Practice MCQ to be undertaken during tutorial with lecturer feedback.
- Practice numeracy test with feedback
- During clinical skills sessions there will be the opportunity to use filming facilities within the clinical skills suite which will enable students to work in real-time simulation scenarios with the opportunity for detailed formative feedback from lecturers, clinical practitioners and their peers.

There is no compensation between the essay, MCQ and eMORA. Students need to complete the required competencies (pass/fail) located within the eMORA and successfully complete the essay and MCQ in order to pass the module. The medicines management assessment will need to be completed successfully in order to complete the eMORA. There are two attempts permitted for the medicines management assessment before the eMORA is considered as failed.
