Objectives

In the course of this module students should further develop their skills of historical enquiry, interpretation and synthesis.

By the end of the module a student should show:
- Knowledge and understanding of key issues in the social;
- Political and economic history of inter-war Europe;
- An awareness of the factors contributing to the breakdown of democratic regimes in this period.

Syllabus

By the turn of the twentieth century almost all European states had developed some form of national democratic institutions.

Within three decades, most of these regimes had succumbed to left or right wing Europe:
- the social consequences of the pace of modernisation, cultural revolution and the destruction of the apparent intellectual certainties of the 19th century,
- the cataclysm of World War I and the instability of the peace,
- the rise of communism and the fear of proletarian revolution, nationalism, and economic crisis.
