Module summary

This module offers an exciting way of doing history by working with partner organisations, like West Yorkshire Archive Service and Special Collections in the Brotherton Library. It provides an excellent opportunity for you to utilise the wealth of original archive material on our doorstep in collaboration with archive professionals whilst you carry out independent research. The module encourages you to develop your awareness of the complex relationship between archivists and archives and how they create and shape history and heritage. The course is a mixture of workshops, project supervision, and dedicated time with archivists, focused on the creation of resources for public use: it could be an exhibition, guide to a collection, or web resources. This work placement module provides a stepping stone to work in museums, archives or heritage, as well as preparation for an academic career, by developing transferrable skills around public engagement, digital engagement, and education.

Objectives

- To provide students with practical experience of working with archives
- Engage students with the scholarship on the relationship between archives, history and heritage
- Produce historical resources for a specific audience
- Encourage students' development and reflection upon it

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have:
- Acquired a knowledge of the practices of archives
- A critical appreciation of how history and heritage is created from archives
- A detailed understanding of the archival collection and historical theme(s) that underpin their project
- A grasp of the factors involved when tailoring historical resources to a public audience
- The ability to articulate the skills and experience they have gained during the module in a professional context

Syllabus

The teaching on this module is designed to support students in their work placement and their projects. It combines:

1. Module workshops, covering broad issues relating to archives and history, project development, training, and assessment preparation.

2. Archive-specific sessions and mentoring, inducting students to the archive and then regular meetings during the work placement.

Each year a varied suite of projects/themes will be offered, matching areas that archives are interested in developing. Students will apply to these themes and have considerable opportunity to shape the form of the final project output. In some cases, students may be working as a group on a project/with an archive, but with individual tasks and activities.
