Module summary
This module introduces you to key developments in the history of medicine, and discuss sources and approaches used by historians of health, medicine and society. The module is team-taught. Seminars are based on pre-circulated readings and address key debates and historiographical developments. You are introduced to key library resources, archives and museum collections for the history of health and medicine within the university and in the local region.Objectives
The module aims to assess the development of the history of medicine and the social history of medicine as historical sub-disciplines, as well as the place of health and medicine within the discipline of history. Two-hour weekly seminars will allow you to debate and interrogate key approaches that have shaped the methodology and practice of historians of medicine and health. These seminars will also provide time for you to practice applying these approaches to relevant primary sources.Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Assess critically the development of histories of health and medicine
2. Interrogate and apply key approaches that have shaped the methodology and practice of historians of medicine and health
3. Evaluate and critically analyse a broad range of primary sources related to the histories of medicine and health.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will deliver a 7-10 minute in-class presentation on a source of their choice in the relevant week (W2-7). They will then receive peer-to-peer formative feedback from the other members of the class and written feedback from the tutor to help them develop their ideas ahead of the submission of the summative assessment in week 8. Students will receive training in the first seminar on how to give constructive feedback. They will also receive feedback on their source analysis in advance of the essay deadline.Methods of assessment

2,000-word source analysis Students will choose one of the approaches taught during weeks 2-7 and use it to analyse a primary source of their choice.
