Pre-requisite qualifications

- Successful completion of ITAL1030 - Beginners Italian (A1 of the CEFR).
- Students wanting to take this module as a Discovery module need to get the permission of the Programme Manager for Italian before enrolling onto the module. Approval will be based on prior knowledge of Italian and any FLTU Italian modules which may have been previously taken.

Module summary

This module aims to take students rapidly from about A1-level to about A2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), in the understanding and use of written and spoken Italian. Teaching is by four one-hour language classes each week, whose aim is to develop accuracy, general and communicative language competences in Italian, at CEFR Level A2+. The textbook in use (see reading list for details) is linked to the CEFR, and will support in-class activities. These intend to help students practise receptive, productive, and interactive skills in Italian, while assisting students developing key competences in a variety of contexts, up to CEFR Level A2+ in Italian.Dedicated drop-in sessions provide students with opportunities to network with peers, explore areas of interest, and ask specific questions on module content and coursework while helping consolidate key skills and knowledge throughout the module.As this module is compulsory for Italian degree students, the number of discovery module places may be limited; those students wishing to take a more communicative and less intensive approach to learning Italian language are advised to consider modules offered by Languages for All (LfA).

Objectives

This module takes students from CEFR A1 level to CEFR A2+ level in Italian. It focuses on consolidating accuracy, general and communicative language competences when using the language in a range of contexts up to A2+ level.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will:
1. Have a more in-depth grounding in the principal constructions of Italian grammar and key Italian vocabulary in the topics covered.
2. Further be able to extract accurately key information from written, audio and visual material in Italian, up to CEFR Level A2+.
3. Be able to understand and use written and spoken Italian with some competence in a variety of contexts up to CEFR Level A2+.
4. Have a correct pronunciation and intonation in Italian.
5. Demonstrate an awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between Italian and English.

Syllabus

Topic areas normally included are:
• The study of the basic rules of Italian grammar, including more advanced constructions at CEFR Level A2+, such as the use of the Imperfect and Future tenses.
• Reading and writing in Italian around everyday topics and their corresponding vocabulary at CEFR Level A2+.
• Audio-visual comprehension and speaking activities around familiar topics in Italian at CEFR Level A2+.
• The study of the cultures of the Italian-speaking world.

Private study

• Independent online learning: self-study tasks on the VLE and the Language Zone (10 hours)
• Private Study: review of the lesson, attendance to drop-in sessions, and preparation for the weekly classes (45 hours); guided and independent study (35 hours); assessed work write-up (45 hours); exam preparation (25 hours)

Feedback on formative submission of Language Log before Easter; feedback on guided independent study (e.g. during drop-in sessions); feedback on activities which need preparing before class; feedback on in-class performance (e.g. after written exercises, speaking activities, and pop quizzes which are constructively aligned against the summative assessment).
