Module summary

This module consolidates and improves basic and more complex grammatical structures used in a variety of contexts. Students will reinforce and further develop their linguistic competence (written and oral) in Italian grammar, vocabulary, style, and specialised uses of Italian.The textbook Affresco Italiano (see reading list for details) and additional materials are linked to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). The CEFR describes language ability on a scale of levels from A1 for beginners up to C2.The incorporation of the CEFR demonstrates:- the validity of our language programme- that it facilitates students' understanding of the level they achieve- logical progression through levels.Knowledge of the CEFR enhances:- students' engagement with the language learning experience- students' motivation and progress during their experience abroad;- educational and occupational mobility thanks to the transferability of the CEFR system.

Objectives

- Consolidation and improvement of linguistic competence (written and oral) in Italian grammar, vocabulary, style, and specialised uses at an appropriate level
- Reinforcement and development of an accurate linguistic ability in a variety of cultural and social contexts.

Learning outcomes
1. Consolidation of knowledge and linguistic competence (written and oral) in Italian grammar, vocabulary and style.
2. Classes on written Italian aim at the elimination of basic errors, and the development of an accurate, though unpretentious, vocabulary applicable to a variety of cultural and social contexts.
3. Oral classes will pursue two goals: to enable students to read an Italian text accurately (as regards pronunciation) and intelligibility (as regards phrasing and intonation); to enable students to communicate accurately and with increasing sophistication on selected cultural and social topics.

Oral classes will pursue the goal of enabling students to communicate accurately and with increasing sophistication on selected cultural and social topics.

In written classes, a similar range of subject-matter and register will be covered. Specific grammatical and stylistic points. appropriate to this level will be analysed.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

In oral seminars, progress will be monitored through feedback given on student presentations and general class participation.

In written language seminars, progress will be monitored through feedback given on written work (in each full semester, five written exercises are set; marks for written work produced during teaching weeks do not contribute to the module assessment, but doing the work and submitting it on time is compulsory).

Progress will also be monitored through work conducted online (Language Learning Log on the VLE).
