Module summary

This module aims to further develop language skills, building upon the enhancement of the command of Italian achieved during level 2 and residence in Italy.The aim is to approach the ability to speak, write and understand Italian that is possessed by an educated native speaker. This involves achieving communicative competence with sensitivity to appropriate register, orally and in writing. This corresponds to the C1-C2 levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFRL).Students who wish to enrol on this module as a discovery module are asked to contact the module manager.

Objectives

Further consolidation of written and oral aptitude at an appropriately extended level, through familiarity with sophisticated literary and non-literary linguistic constructions in a variety of registers.

Learning outcomes
1. knowledge and understanding of complex grammatical and syntactical structures in Italian;
2. advanced knowledge of Italian vocabulary;
3. an appreciation of nuances of style and register in oral and written communication.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students should have enhanced their skills in writing, speaking, reading and listening to Italian and be able to:
- express themselves fluently and accurately in Italian at an advanced level, in writing and orally, demonstrating awareness and use of register and vocabulary appropriate to the context, and awareness of Italian society and culture;
- translate between Italian and English accurately and idiomatically;
- prepare, deliver and discuss a short oral relazione in Italian.

Syllabus

Oral classes will develop students' ability to express themselves clearly and cogently on matters requiring an in-depth knowledge of Italian at an extended level; and will prepare students for the final oral examination.
Written classes will pursue a similar aim in relation to the particular demands of a specialised form of communication.

In both cases, grammatical nuances and linguistic phenomena will be isolated and analysed as appropriate.
