Module summary
The module will provide an introduction to the study of law and some of the core areas of law, including contract law, tort law, public law and criminal law. This understanding will be applied to current legal issues in this area.Objectives
The main objective of this module is to provide an introduction to the study of law and to enable students to see the breadth of issues that law touches on. This will provide a critical understanding of the law and its role in society as well as the skills to take this study further into other discovery modules in Law. The module will provide the skills for reflective independent study and basic legal knowledge of the core areas. The module also aims to prepare students to think critically and to be confident in discussing current legal issues and problem solving.Learning outcomes
At the end of the module, student will be able to:
- demonstrate a range of key basic study skills including the ability to extract relevant legal issues from a case or scenario and define and identify solutions;
- use legal databases to search for cases and synthesise research materials;
- understand and apply appropriate legal terminology and reasoning to produce a coherent legal account of issues within the legal system;
- discuss and reflect upon an aspect of contract law, tort law, public law or criminal law and how it applies to current issues;
- provide a basic insight into the operation of the law, legal institutions and procedures of English law.
