Module summary
Students will gain an in-depth knowledge of the central issues on corporate social responsibility and regulation of corporate social responsibility.Students will develop a critical understanding of the relationship between voluntary corporate responsibility and mandatory responsibility in order to help students to understand corporate social responsibility. Students will develop an ability to critically evaluate the current hard law and soft law within the regulatory framework on regulating corporate social responsibility.Objectives
The objective of the module is to introduce students to the theoretical debates and doctrine of the concept of corporate social responsibility and to enable students to evaluate the concept and its practical implication for corporations and policy makers in the globalised business environment. This module aims to provide students with intellectual knowledge and the practical skills necessary to understand the role of companies in globalised society and to equip students with effective independent research, communication and interpersonal skills. The concept corporate social responsibility will be discussed closely with its regulatory framework both hard law and soft law.Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students will be able to:
- demonstrate detailed and in-depth knowledge of the concept of CSR, including its history, relevant theories, and limitations to legal policy and business practices in national, international, multi-sector and multi-disciplinary settings;
- critically analyse the global settings and development of corporate social responsibility, including agenda setting, motives, assurance standards and regulatory approaches;
- apply the principles and practices of corporate social responsibility critically and comprehensively to identify and explain key legal and related sources and issues in this field;
- demonstrate the ability to creatively evaluate the relationships among the above range of legal concepts, values, principles, institutions and procedures, as well as their limits in legal, ethical, economic and cultural framework;
- critically discuss the CSR with current corporate scales, financial crisis and their legal response.
