Module summary
As is often recognised, the sport, exercise, and physical activity fields are no strangers to false information, unsubstantiated claims, and bad scientific practices. In this module students will engage with the contemporary issues in these fields through evidence-based debate. As a result, through weekly explorations, an understanding of how to develop academic justification, and the processes for defending academic arguments, will be developed. These skills will also be considered in the wider context of academic study and research.Objectives
The module aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of contemporary evidence-based debates in sport, exercise, and physical activity alongside developing research and critical thinking skills. Each week students will be given a unique and challenging statement for which they will undertake exploratory research before presenting an evidence-based conclusion for group debate.The topic areas to be covered include:
1. What is sport, exercise, and physical activity?
2. Sport, health, and wellbeing
3. Sport and sustainability
4. Sport and technology.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Understand the nature of evidence-based academic debate in sport, exercise, and physical activity.
2. Apply and defend evidence-based knowledge on contemporary topics in sport, exercise, and physical activity.
3. Develop and communicate structured discourse on contemporary topics in sport, exercise, and physical activity.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Utilise research and philosophic skills that include the sourcing, judging, and interpretation of data from a range of literature: academic, populist, and grey.
Syllabus
The module will be wide ranging in points of discussion as the intention is to focus on the emerging contemporary issues within the field. However, an indicative content includes the exploration of such topics such as:
1. How are sport, exercise, and physical activity defined?
2. Is the current approach to sport environmentally sustainable?
3. Is there a relationship between elite sporting success and increased exercise participation?
4. Is competitive sport safe for children?
5. How will AI impact on sport, exercise, and physical activity professionals?
Additionally, throughout the module, students will be encouraged to recognise and introduce new issues of discussion and interest based on the dynamic nature of the field.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Throughout seminars the session lead will plan activities and challenges that present formative feedback opportunities. These will include strategies such as:-Group debate
- Group problem solving
- Presentation of findings
- Discussion of knowledge dissemination
- One to one and group support in supervisions for development of assessment skills.
