Module summary
The terms “sports development” and “sports management” are widely used but without them necessarily being fully understood what this area of work actually is, how it’s conducted and where different opportunities exist. This module will provide students who have an interest in working in this environment an overview of the sporting landscape, the different opportunities available and the skills required to succeed.Objectives
Students will develop a critical understanding of what the sports development and sports management environment looks like, the skills required to succeed and types of challenges you may expect to face. Students will then apply this understanding to develop strategies and plans to tackle key sports and development challenges.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should:
- have a critical understanding of what is sports development / sports administration;
- comprehend the broad understanding of the national sporting landscape and how it is structured / funded;
- have an understanding of the different sectors that sports development / sports administration operates;
- critically analyse common sports development principles;
- evaluate the key competencies and characteristics of successful sports development practitioners;
- understand access points and career opportunities;
- understand the current key challenges and apply knowledge to develop a sports development strategy.

- The national perspective – Government, Lottery funding
- Understanding different delivery agencies
- What sports development practitioners actually do
- Understand key challenges with practical examples
- Produce basic sports development plans based on a real to life situation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Throughout both lectures and seminars the session lead will plan activities and challenges that present formative feedback opportunities. These will include strategies such as;- Group Problem Solving
- Presentation of findings
- One to one discussions in tutorials
Bi-weekly meeting with staff.
Bi-weekly written report showing meeting minutes, plans, progress and action points.
