Module summary
This module will allow students to discover for themselves the rich and varied structure and use of the world’s languages. Students will develop research and communication skills as they carry out group and independent projects on a variety of languages then communicate the results in oral presentations and written reports. Students will also organise a student linguistics conference where they summarise papers on a topic of their choice.Objectives
Through lectures, seminars and group presentations, this module aims to:(1) introduce students to the language structure and sociolinguistics of selected languages and English varieties
(2) guide students to explore the variety in and differences between a selection of the world’s languages
(3) develop students' skills in analysing data from English and unfamiliar languages
(4) develop students' individual and group research skills
(5) develop students' group work and group presentation skills
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
LO1: demonstrate an understanding of both the structural and sociolinguistic characteristics of a number of the world's languages and varieties of English
LO2: locate relevant linguistic information and synthesise this information for a target audience
LO3: analyse and present linguistic data in a selected language, demonstrating understanding of the relevant terms, concepts and conventions.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
SLO4: apply foundational academic skills (critical thinking, presentation, information searching, academic writing, time management, and productivity)
SLO5: implement foundational digital skills
SLO6: employ foundational work-ready skills through group work (communication, teamwork, problem solving and analytical skills, interpersonal and active learning)

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Work for two group projects receives formative feedback in written form.Students view the Project presentations produced by other groups (each student viewing other presentations prior to attempting the summative project). Students receive written formative feedback on their presentations from the lecturer as well as in-class comments from both the lecturer and peers.
Informal formative feedback arises throughout the module, including through staff and student feedback on a practice project early in the term, posts on the Minerva discussion board and in-class Q&A.
