Module summary

This course will explore second language teaching from the perspective of linguistics and second language acquisition. After surveying the range of approaches to Language, and the current set of generalisations coming out of second language acquisition research, we will review teaching methodologies of the past as well as those in current use. We will evaluate these methodologies in terms of developments in the fields of linguistics and language acquisition.Drawing from these theoretical perspectives, you will learn to identify theoretical principles underlying language teaching tools. You will also apply your knowledge by designing a lesson plan which highlights the theoretical findings you identify as the most relevant.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be:
- able to identify the underlying linguistic principles of a range of mainstream and alternative language teaching methods;
- able to present methodological implications from findings in linguistics and language acquisition for language teaching;
- able to make principled decisions when designing lessons, choosing curriculum and considering syllabus design;
- working towards a teaching identity which is grounded in an understanding of language and language acquisition theory.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should:
- be aware of the range of mainstream approaches to the study of language well enough to identify how they differ and how they overlap;
- have an awareness of general findings from second language acquisition research;
- be familiar with the practices of mainstream and alternative language teaching methods;
- be able to see direct connections between linguistic research and language teaching;
- have knowledge of underlying perspectives about language and how that impacts decisions in the classroom.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- demonstrate that they have deepened their knowledge of concepts, underlying frameworks, and approaches to language teaching;
- analyse and discuss a wide range of texts and viewpoints;
- justify practices of classroom teaching in terms of theoretical concepts;
- analyse and apply secondary sources;
- use secondary and primary sources to independently;
-formulate and present a cogent and coherent analysis of current methodologies in language teaching.

- Language: from structuralism to generativism to functionalism to cognitivism
- Second Language Development: accepted generalisations from research
- Mainstream approaches to teaching language: Communicative Language Teaching
- Alternative approaches to teaching language
- Applying theory/research in linguistics and language acquisition to the language teaching.

Private study

- Preparing for classes (reading): 15x3 hours = 45 hours
- Preparing for seminars: 5x3 hours = 15 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Students are given feedback on their teaching/presentations in seminars. These presentations form the basis of their assessed essay.
- Feedback includes direct comments to guide the writing of the assessed essay.
