Module summary

This module provides students with a thorough understanding of selected topics in phonetics and phonology. Each topic is discussed from both theoretical and methodological perspectives. Students learn advanced phonetic and phonological terminology, read research papers and undertake their own research.

Objectives

This module aims to provide students with a detailed understanding of selected topics in phonetics and phonology, a command of phonetic and phonological terms and concepts, an ability to read and evaluate original research in the field, and practical skills in the analysis of speech data.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate a detailed understanding of selected topics in phonetics and phonology
2. demonstrate a command of advanced terms and concepts in articulatory and acoustic phonetics, as well as phonological theory

Skills Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students will be able to:
3. demonstrate skills in analysing real-world data to support or assess theoretical arguments
4. effectively use specialist software and digital tools in conducting research

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The seminars provide a forum for supporting and monitoring students’ progress. Students are offered the option of completing a formative writing assignment on which they get written feedback, prior to the submission of their summatively assessed report.
