Module summary

In this module, students are given an overview of the wide range of research methodologies associated with linguistic studies, and are supported in designing, carrying out and reporting on their own independent research study in linguistics.

Objectives

This module aims to provide students with an understanding of research methodologies in a range of linguistics topics, and support students to produce a sustained piece of writing that reflects independent research in the field of linguistic study. It does this through a combination of taught sessions, online learning resources, formative guidance and one-to-one supervision.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. plan and undertake an independent research study in linguistics, appropriate to Masters level
2. formulate research questions, apply appropriate methods for addressing them, and accurately interpret the results of their research
3. situate their own and previously published research studies in the wider context of linguistic research
4. acquire an understanding of issues surrounding the collection and analysis of language data, including relevant ethical considerations

Skills Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module, students will be able to:
5. apply problem-solving skills to tackle an independent research brief
6. effectively communicate complex ideas in an academic style

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The weekly sessions throughout semester 2 and subsequent one-to-one supervision will provide regular opportunities for supporting and monitoring students’ progress. As indicated in ‘Other information about coursework’, the module will have a timeline of compulsory formative assignments to support students’ work on their dissertation projects and ensure timely progress across the cohort.

To support students’ work on their dissertation projects and ensure timely progress across the cohort, the module will have a timeline of compulsory assignments. Dissertation submissions that are not accompanied by a record of active engagement with the research process or evidence of ethical research practice will be deemed incomplete and marked accordingly.
