Module summary
This module covers basic concepts in linguistic research methodology, introducing different paradigms and debates in current linguistic research, and how to develop suitable academic literacies in reading and writing about linguistic research. In doing so, the module provides the foundation for designing and implementing an independent research study on a topic of their choice.Objectives
The module aims to develop students’ skills in representing linguistic data and referring to primary and secondary sources according to current conventions in linguistics; locating and critically evaluating information on language-related topics and research articles in linguistics; and recognising what constitutes an appropriate writing style in linguistics in different genres, and using this in their own work.Learning outcomes
On the completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate core skills in linguistic research, including finding, interpreting and citing sources in the literature
2. critically evaluate research articles on language-related topics
3. demonstrate awareness of the first steps involved in planning an independent research project
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will be able to
4. demonstrate academic and digital skills (academic writing, time management, digital proficiency and productivity)
5. demonstrate work-ready skills (problem solving and analytical skills, active learning, core literacies)

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
The weekly workshops are a forum for monitoring students’ progress and use of materials developed for the module, and for providing formative feedback where relevant. Students will also attend timetabled academic literacy support workshops, tailored to fit the aims and LOs of this module. Activities in all workshops will include formative activities to prepare them on how to approach assessed assignments in this module and across the programme, and have the opportunity to submit formative work for written feedback prior to submitting the summative assignment.Methods of assessment
