Module summary

This module is aimed at you if you are a student interested in the meaning and development of Modernism and Postmodernism throughout the twentieth century. Examples will be drawn from a variety of sources, such as: historical documents, art, novels, poetry, film, television, photography and architecture. Integral to this module will be support in the development of academic skills, including essay writing and use of technology.

Objectives

This module will give an overview of Modernity and Post-Modernity. It will provide you with an understanding of the nature of modern and postmodern culture and how it is defined by writers, thinkers and creators in the field. Workshops on this module will offer opportunities to discuss working definitions of concepts. You will develop various study skills in critical thinking, discussion, academic writing and digital literacies.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of ideas, concepts, practitioners and thinkers associated with modern and post-modern thought.
2. Apply an understanding of Modernity/Post-Modernity in relation to creative and cultural works using real world examples from a variety of media and disciplines.
3. Demonstrate an awareness of contemporary critical perspectives relating to representation.
4. Examine, evaluate and utilise definitions and terminology within the study of Modernity and Post-Modernity.

Skills Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Digital Literacies and Information Searching: Navigate digital resources to find relevant subject information and assess this for relevance and reliability, in order to support and develop your own ideas which are communicated using a digital platform.
2. Academic Writing: Clearly communicate your ideas about, and analysis of, key cultural works associated with Modernity and Post-Modernity using academic writing whilst acknowledging and referencing your sources.
3. Critical Thinking: Apply critical thinking to weigh up arguments and perspectives expressing confidence in your own evidence-based ideas and arguments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There is a formative developmental assignment at the mid-point of the module, as well as an outline plan submission with feedback and a tutorial opportunity. This core module also supports learners to engage with formative feedback received at programme-level via the Kickstart essay within the foundation year induction process. This is a precursor to the mid-point Modernity formative assessment. Formative feedback is also provided by tutors within workshop activities, interactive lecture discussions, and seminars.
