Module summary
This module aims to develop students’ understanding of several core topics in Electricity, Magnetism and Thermal Physics, using theoretical descriptions, demonstrations and worked examples. Throughout this module, students will be given many opportunities to develop their own problem-solving skills and to learn how to apply the theories introduced to simple real-life situations. This module provides students with a chance to learn key concepts and skills needed for a variety of Science and Engineering degree programmes. Objectives
The aim of this module is to provide students with the core concepts and skills needed to succeed within the fields of Thermal Physics and Electromagnetism.Students will use some of the mathematical toolbox, notation and techniques introduced in the first semester to advance their understanding of physics within the fields of electromagnetism, electronics and thermodynamics.
Teaching will be supported by interactive content, demonstrations, virtual labs and online quizzes which will offer many opportunities for the students to engage with the material, connect the content with real world applications, test their knowledge and gain confidence in problem solving
Learning outcomes
1. Identify the relevant physical laws that govern physical phenomena in the area of Electromagnetism and Thermal physics
2. Present physical ideas in the area of Electromagnetism and Thermal physic using appropriate scientific language, mathematical notation and diagrams
3. Model a physical problem and formulate a mathematical solution to describe different physical phenomena
4. Describe, explain and interpret results in physics terms
Skills outcomes
Ability to model and solve physical problems using mathematics; data analysis and interpretation; scientific communication in physics terms; familiarity with mathematical notation and its application in physics problems.
