Module summary
This module is designed to support the development of academic skills in your study within Learning and Teaching. It will address areas such as academic and reflective writing, referencing and research skills, drawing on the elements most appropriate to study on your course and for future practice.Objectives
To enable students to develop the academic skills necessary for successful independent learningLearning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Undertake critical analysis of a range of texts
2. Use appropriate academic conventions in their own writing
3. Identify techniques and strategies to build personal confidence
4. Draw on a range of theories on reflective writing and apply them in practice
5. Evaluate digital learning tools and platforms
6. Identify and evaluate issues of equality and diversity in educational contexts

Syllabus
The content will cover such areas as:
- study skills
- using University resources and systems to access and store information
- referencing and academic integrity
- confidence in academic and professional practice
- critical thinking and reflective writing
- creating digital artefacts to support learning
- exploring intellectual property and internet privacy
- equality and diversity in educational spaces

Students will be required to produce a series of exercises which will form the basis of their portfolio. Students will be encouraged to use the online materials in the VLE and will be required to engage with online skills materials, e.g. skills@library.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
There will be ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the module during seminar sessions and via formative feedback on the exercises for the portfolio. Tutors will be available via email and telephone.Methods of assessment
