Module summary

Using curricula with which you are familiar, this module encourages critical analysis of their design and purposes, considering how they have been socially and politically constructed. Focusing on the decision-making processes and distinguishing between assessment methods and strategies, the significance of assessment strategies in designing and planning the curriculum will be considered.In examining the relationship between assessment and evaluation, you will explore issues of quality assurance and the idea of a curriculum development cycle.

Objectives

By the end of this module, students will be able to:
demonstrate an awareness of the range of factors that influence the content and shape of the curriculum;
understand key concepts, principles and types of assessment and evaluation;
Evaluate a range of curricula and assessments

Learning outcomes
1.Demonstrate an awareness of different types of curricula, and the range of factors that influence content, shape and purpose

2.Appreciate the key principles of assessment and evaluation and critically evaluate a range of approaches

3.Demonstrate the skills needed to design and assess a curriculum relevant to the professional context

Principles and practices in curriculum planning and design

- The origins and development of curriculum
- The social and cultural construction of curriculum
- Recent policies and trends in curriculum design, inclusive practice in curriculum design and implementation
- Curriculum for social, cultural, political and economic purposes
- Principles and practices of assessment and evaluation strategies
- Research on assessment and evaluation strategies and methods
- Assessment, measuring competence, performance and quality assurance
- Integrating curriculum, assessment and learning
