Module summary
This module will provide you with a foundation in the theory and practice of HRM, allowing you to engage critically with developments in the world of work. It begins with an exploration of HRM and the various theoretical perspectives for examining work combined with exploring the practical implementation of HRM in the workplace.Objectives
Through this module students will learn and understand the basic principles of human resource management and practices of the human resource function of businesses. By the end of the module students should understand the core debates and research relevant to basic HRM practices.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
(i) Discuss and appraise the implementation of key concepts, theories and models pertaining to HRM in contemporary organisations;
(ii) describe and evaluate research evidence supporting different HR policies and their effectiveness;
(iii) critically assess the main theoretical models of HRM;
(iv) evaluate practical application of contemporary HRM policies in different functional areas;
(v) explain the imbalance of power between employees and employers in contemporary organisations

Private study
Students will be expected to read around lecture topics and will also be set material to prepare for seminars.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Progress will be monitored informally during seminars where all students will be expected to participate in discussing topics as well as leading group discussions themselves. Summative assessment at the end of the module will take the form of an examination.Methods of assessment
