Module summary

The aim of this module is to develop your higher level technical, professional and ethical skills appropriate for a career in banking and finance in times of technological and sustainability challenges. The module is focused on a critical evaluation of the ethical and financial dimensions of various aspects of sustainability, e.g., environmental and societal sustainability. It is delivered by academics based in the Business School with support from the Inter-disciplinary Ethics Applied Centre. As well as academic literature, the module includes realistic unstructured complex case study scenarios in which you will need to demonstrate professional and ethical judgement.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to develop students' higher level technical, professional and ethical skills appropriate for a career in banking and finance in times of technological and sustainability challenges. As well as the academic literature, the module includes unstructured complex case study scenarios in which students will need to demonstrate appropriate professional and ethical judgement.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Discuss key ethical concepts and evaluate their application in banking and finance;
2. Evaluate alternative theories on ethics and relate them to corporate responsibility practice in the banking and finance sector especially with respect to sustainability;
3. Demonstrate an understanding of how decisions in banking and finance affect environmental sustainability; and
4. How artificial intelligence shapes the interaction between financial firms and the society in general.

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Identify issues that raise professional responsibilities and consequences of unethical behaviour and formulate appropriate professional recommendations with regard to various dimensions of sustainability
- Demonstrate technical, analytical, evaluative and integrative skills appropriate to a professional in the banking and finance discipline.


Syllabus

Indicative content:
Business ethics and corporate social responsibility, banking as a profession and professional ethics, leadership and organisational culture, whistleblowing, banking and finance in the age of Green Finance, financial and ethical aspects of AI and big data in banking and finance, technological and environmental challenges to risk management.
