Module summary
This module examines the structure, management and practices of investment banking. After having provided an overview of the key business characteristics of investment banks, the course offers an in-depth analysis of the business activities of mergers and acquisitions, financing and investment; and, the creation of value through financial advisory services. Special attention will be dedicated to examining the services offered to the corporate sector in terms of corporate restructuring and defence. The course will end with an assessment of the key risks involving investment banking and the related regulatory framework.Objectives
This module aims at developing students’ knowledge on the main characteristics of the investment banking business. The purpose is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the role that investment banks play in the financial industry and the services they offer to the corporate sector. Special attention will be paid to examining the risks and regulation of the investment banking industry. At the end of the module students are expected to be able to critically analyse and solve conventional problems faced within the investment banking industry.Learning outcomes
With the completion of this module students should be able to:
- Describe the various roles of an investment bank
- Explain and evaluate the key differences between the balance sheet of an investment bank and the balance sheet of a commercial bank
- Explain and critically evaluate the role of investment banks in the equity and in the debt markets
- Critically assess the roles played by investment banks in the sell-side and buy-side of merger and acquisition (M&A) transactions
- Critically evaluate the theory and practice of risk management and regulation in the investment banking sector
