Objectives

The module aims to familiarise the students with the use of quantitative techniques pertinent to the understanding of modern finance theories and essential in solving finance problems. Its main emphasis is on the applications of various quantitative techniques.

Learning outcomes
Students will have opportunities to develop a good understanding of methods and applications of quantitative techniques in finance. They should be able to use these techniques in analysing and solving problems encountered by corporate financial managers & financial decision makers and present, interpret, discuss the results in preparing appropriate report. Students are also expected to become proficient in the use of Excel in solving finance problems.

Skills outcomes
Students are expected to be able to communicate logical arguments both verbally (through class discussion) and in writing (via module assignments) that relate to the interpretation and use of quantitative techniques. The computer-based assignment as well as class exercises will also help develop IT skills as well as general numeracy skills.

Private study

Technical demonstration on the use of Excel for each session will be recorded as videos which will be used as independent online learning materials. Students need to complete practical exercises for each session applying the technique learned from the lecture and the online demo. Students will have opportunities to ask questions in the seminars.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Feedback will be given in the seminars. Tutors will provide feedback to students in classes as they work through the practical exercises.
