Objectives
The module provides an opportunity for advanced study in employment law. Through locating employment law within its wider economic, political and social context the module provides the knowledge and techniques necessary for the effective use of employment law in the management of people.Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module students will be able to:

- Locate and make effective use of legal sources, including statutes and cases, and use a law library (e.g. in formulating policy).
- Interpret contractual and other documents of a legal character.
- Deploy the knowledge and skills necessary to use legal methodology to advise managers about issues which have an employment law dimension.
- Implement employment policies which are in accordance with legal requirements and best practice.
- Deploy the knowledge and skills necessary to provide effective lay representation in an employment tribunal.
- Explain the broad structure of the law and its institutions including the legal concepts and rules relevant to the employment field, the substantive law relating to employment and the impact of law on the employment relationship.
- Interpret the legal procedures for resolving employment law disputes and advise on the use of employment law in meeting management objectives.
- Recognise the influence of the European Union on UK employment law.

Syllabus
Indicative content
The module is designed to provide an understanding of both individual and collective employment law. It is organised so that it follows the sequence of the employment relationship:
Introduction to the contract of employment and classification of the employment relationship.
Recruitment and selection, terms and conditions of employment and the statutory floor of employment protection rights and with questions of termination.
Discrimination law including sex, race and disability discrimination and equal pay.
Employment tribunals and the law relating to trades unions.
An important feature of the module is the integration of EU law throughout and an assessment of the impact of the EU on UK employment law.
