Objectives

This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to integrate, apply and further develop aspects learned in other parts of the programme. Students will use the dissertation project to explore the creation of a new business venture or social enterprise or look at how best to support or grow an existing firm (e.g. a family firm). The option of conducting a more traditional research-oriented project to explore a topic of interest in greater depth is also available.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module students will be able to critically evaluate:
- enterprise and entrepreneurship theories, research methodologies and concepts
- contextualise current issues in enterprise and entrepreneurship

Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Deploy project management skills in the execution of individual tasks
- Creatively formulate, evaluate and communicate ideas in writing

- Apply academic rigour and critical thinking in the acquisition, critical analysis and presentation of conceptual and empirical material derived from primary and secondary sources
- Apply and evaluate theory and practice in their own research, advanced scholarship or area of specific interest within the broader discipline

This module is almost completely self-directed, requiring students to independently source relevant data and materials.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The dissertation is developed under the close guidance of a supervisor allocated to each student.
The supervisor will help monitoring progress in a number of ways, including:

(i) agree the dissertation proposal;
(ii) point the student in the right direction for the literature review and other sources of information;
(iii) discuss the appropriateness of theory and methodology;
(iv) read a draft of an early chapter and provide feedback.
