Module summary
This module will encourage you to engage with contemporary and critical issues and debates in the study of enterprise and entrepreneurship. During workshops you will have the opportunity to engage with academic speakers and experts to debate some of the most current and pressing challenges in enterprise and entrepreneurship studies.Objectives
This module aims to give students the opportunity to explore contemporary and critical issues in enterprise and entrepreneurship.Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- demonstrate in-depth critical knowledge of enterprise and entrepreneurship theories and concepts using techniques relevant to the discipline.
- evaluate and contextualise current issues in enterprise and entrepreneurship
- identify and explain the changing nature of enterprise and entrepreneurship.
- critically evaluate the potential of business activities to deliver negative social and environmental impacts

Syllabus
Indicative content:
Invited guest speakers who are recognised for their academic, policy or practice excellence deliver sessions based on their area of expertise. They will introduce the topics, outlining theoretical and empirical approaches used within the field, highlighting current debates and approaches used to explore these themes; encouraging and supporting you to critically engage with recent publications in relevant fields.
You will play an integral role in the workshop debate and discussion, providing key questions and gaining understanding of how theory may translate into both policy and practice.
Topics/themes that the module may explore:
- Gender and Entrepreneurship
- Stimulating enterprise in low-income communities
- Small business growth 
- Born Global businesses
- Social Enterprises
- Positive and negative social and environmental impacts of enterprise and entrepreneurship
Within each topic/theme we will cover issues such as:
- The historical development of a research area
- Current theoretical, practice and policy debates
- Methodological approaches

Private study
The module has a core text and a recommended supplementary edited book of readings. There will also be a reading list of contemporary journal articles.Private study details: 5 x 10 hours reading for workshop preparation and 70 hours preparation for examination.
