Objectives

The aim of this module is for students to undertake a real consultancy project working with a client organisation to plan, negotiate, research and deliver a consultancy project. The module will involve the gathering of primary data on a contemporary issue. The range of issues covered in projects will be similar to those experienced by the contemporary management consultant.

The module encapsulates the learning gathered on the programme, with students undertaking a real-time consultancy project, working with a ‘client’ organisation. Students will also acquire considerable insight into broader management issues when they negotiate with the project brief, operationalise their research strategy or discuss findings with the client company. Under faculty supervision, and a company mentor, individual students will apply the mix of theoretical skills and applied techniques on the MSc. to a 'live' corporate situation.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:

- Utilise the conceptual and applied thinking obtained from the programme in conducting a consulting project related to a contemporary situation from a management perspective;
- Acquire, critically analyse and present conceptual and empirical material derived from primary and/or secondary sources using appropriate academic rigour;
- Implement an appropriate research design under the guidance and supervision of a faculty supervisor

- Introductory sessions providing guidance on the Dissertation project
- Negotiation and operationalization of project brief with industry based organisation/academic
- Regular meetings with supervisor with milestones at each meeting

Private study

Students will have 2 initial lectures to brief them on the dissertation. However, the modules preceding this – consulting skills; evidence based consultancy; and Management Consulting: The Life Cycle will have given them a clear understanding of the nature of consultancy projects and research.
Once allocated to a project, they will work with their academic supervisor, and their organisational contact to negotiate, plan and implement their research project.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students' progress will be monitored through regular meetings (once a month) with their supervisor. These meetings will each have a milestone and actions will be noted, minuted and communicated. Students are encouraged to submit a 3000 word literature review (unassessed) by June, to receive feedback on their writing.

9,500 word research project will be set in April and due for submission on the same date as all other Masters programme dissertations/projects. Indicative date: the first Thursday in September. The resit for this module will be 100% by 12,000 words Dissertation.
