Module summary

This module provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge to manage cultural differences and ethical issues in international business. It examines major theoretical contributions in this area, the empirical work on which these contributions rest and their practical applications. It explores key issues in cross-cultural management and identifies important areas of contemporary controversy in the management of multinational activity. The module is issue-focussed, with a strong emphasis on current and ongoing debates and a link to business ethics theories and international business theories.

Objectives

This module provides students with theoretical and practical knowledge to manage cultural differences and ethical issues in international business.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

1. Critically evaluate the concept of culture, business ethics and ethical culture and their importance in international business
2. Analyse key theoretical dimensions of culture, ethics and their practical applications
3. Critically evaluate how cross-cultural issues impact upon the management of business functions across national borders and business ethics
4. Examine how companies develop, implement, and enforce ethical standards and manage cultural differences when operating in international markets
5. Appraise the relationship between culture and business ethics and how international business is impacted by local perceptions, values, and beliefs.


Syllabus

The module will examine the role of national culture and ethics in International Business and key methodologies to conceptualise cultural difference and ethical values and how cross-cultural issues impact upon the management of business functions across national borders and business ethics. The module introduces students to the various approaches that firms can apply to manage cultural and ethical issues when operating internationally. The module will examine theoretical fundamentals of national culture and ethics and their application in marketing, human resource management, supply chain management, corporate social responsibility and sustainability of international firms.

Private study

Online resources will be provided in Minerva for the students to study before and after the lectures and seminars. Students will also be expected to familiarise themselves with the essential and optional readings from the reading list.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be able to gain feedback on the spot during the interactions with the teaching staff and peers in the lectures and seminars. There will be also a Test Your Knowledge Quiz at the end of each lecture and also on Minerva for each learning week for the students to check their knowledge and understanding of the material for a given week. There will also be academic support staff session available for students to discuss their understanding of the module material.
