Module summary

The module provides the opportunity for you to identify and develop research in an area of interest and produce a document of 12,000 words to document the process and findings. This includes a (up to) 10,000 word dissertation and a (up to) 2,000 word dissemination report translating the dissertation findings for practitioners/policymakers. You are allocated a supervisor who will work with you on a small group and one-to-one basis at key points throughout the process.

Objectives

The dissertation is intended to provide a capstone to the modules individually and the programme as a whole. The module enables students to develop a research proposal, to select, evaluate, analyse and synthesise the literature, and to carry out the research to demonstrate their ability to plan and manage the research process in order to answer a research question. Students are then required to translate their research findings into actions for a non-academic audience.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module students will be able to:
- Critically evaluate literature relevant to the research question(s)
- Plan and carry out appropriate primary and/or secondary research in line with practical, methodological and ethical constraints and structures
- Synthesise literature and other collected data to produce a document which clearly expresses the research process undertaken
- Translate the findings of the academic dissertation into a report suitable for policymakers and/or practitioners
