Module summary

A basic mathematics course for students who have not done AS-level mathematics, designed to give an introduction to mathematical concepts and their practical application at AS level standard.

Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to:
- manipulate expressions and solve equations involving indices, exponentials and logarithms and solve problems in real-world applications;
- understand and apply basic differential and integral calculus.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:

- understand and apply basic differential and integral calculus.


Syllabus

- Laws of indices, exponentials and logarithms, geometric series.
- Applications such as percentages, compound interest, discounting, growth and decay.
- Elementary differentiation, derivatives of powers, logarithmic and exponential functions.
- Finding gradients, tangents, normals, maxima and minima, application in simple optimisation.
- The concept of integration as anti-differentiation.
- Indefinite and definite integrals of powers and exponential functions. Area under a curve.
