Pre-requisite qualifications
Project-specific.Willingness to work in a team, and to carry out independent research.
!! Students taking this module must ensure that they are enrolled on the module by Wednesday 25th of September, and submit their preferences for project topics via Minerva by 5pm on Thursday 26th of September. Students will not be allowed to add this module after this date !!

Module summary
Students will receive research skills training, and carry out an independent research project in a topic in mathematics. Project topics will be allocated according to students' preferred choices. Students will meet as a group to discuss the project topics, with each student researching a specific aspect of the topic and producing an individual project report. Students will give a group presentation of their work with each student contributing.Objectives
To give students the opportunity to develop and practice their research skills, and use the mathematics they have learned.Learning outcomes
By the end of this module the student should be able to:
a) access, use and link together various resources appropriately;
b) understand how mathematics can be used in a specific area;
c) think critically and creatively from a mathematical perspective;
d) write a mathematical report in an appropriate language, and present their work orally with confidence:
e) work effectively in a team.
Syllabus
1. Introduction of project topics with detailed project briefs.
2. Research Skills Training, such as finding and evaluating scientific resources, referencing.
3. Students carry out independent research individually and in teams. Each student will explore a specific aspect of the
research topic. The supervisor will provide feedback and guidance.
4. Interim oral report to supervisor.
5. Individual final project report.
6. Group presentation.
7. Feedback & Questioning meeting with supervisor and assessor.

Meetings with supervisor, interim oral report with feedback.The interim oral report is compulsory (with a mark deduction for non-completion).
