Objectives
This module will give students a thorough introduction to the fundamental principles of oilfield chemistry and corrosion. On completion of this module, students should be able to :Explain the properties and application of a range of chemicals used in corrosion control for oil and gas production
Understand the principal theories of corrosion science and engineering, with particular reference to the oil and gas industry
Learning outcomes
Understand the role of the properties of a range of chemicals used in oil and gas production and their impact on corrosion
Understand the role of electrochemistry in corrosion science and engineering
Understanding of and ability to evaluate the mechanisms of the various forms of corrosion.
Understand the influence of the corrosion environment prevailing in the oil and gas industry.
Skills outcomes
Ability to identify corrosion types experienced in the oilfield environment
Ability to assess the corrosivity of the oilfield environment
Capability to conduct basic electrochemical corrosion measurements
Syllabus
- Intro to corrosion, thermodynamics of corrosion, half-cell reactions, Nernst
- Kinetics of corrosion, Butler-Volmer, basic three electrode cell, Direct Current methods and Faradays law, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy analysis and interpretation
- Localised corrosion: theory and novel inspection techniques
- Microbiologically influenced Corrosion
- Carbon dioxide corrosion and iron carbonate formation
- Hydrogen sulfide corrosion and pitting
- Erosion-corrosion, under-deposit corrosion, top of the line corrosion, corrosion under insulation
- Corrosion inhibitor chemistries and selection processes
- Corrosion resistant materials and material selection
- Coatings, cathodic protection, corrosion inspection and monitoring
