Module summary

This module offers theoretical and practical training required for design of experiments and data processing to address engineering problems. Fundamentals of experimental design, data acquisition and statistical analysis will be discussed and opportunities to analyse, interpret and report realistic experimental data will be offered.

Objectives

This module aims to equip students with the core skills and awareness required to undertake experimental research in mechanical engineering.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Recognise key issues when designing experiments and collecting data, concerning objectivity, reliability and repeatability;
2. Understand how to plan an experiment to answer a specific question;
3. Develop an understanding of data analysis and statistical analysis;
4. Develop skills on data visualisation techniques and demonstrate the ability to present data in a meaningful and concise manner;
5. Develop skills for reading and analysing published experimental research reports;
6. Demonstrate an understanding of key measurement techniques and data analysis tools in different areas of research in mechanical engineering.

Upon successful completion of this module the following Engineering Council Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes (AHEP) learning outcome descriptors (fourth edition) are satisfied:

7. Apply a comprehensive knowledge of mathematics, statistics, natural science and engineering principles to the solution of complex problems. Much of the knowledge will be at the forefront of the particular subject of study and informed by a critical awareness of new developments and the wider context of engineering. (M1)

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills:
- Laboratory practice
- Statistical analysis techniques
- Teamworking
